February debt check… How are we doing?

OK! February is over… Snow is starting to melt, days are getting a litlle longer and warmer… Yay! I can’t wait for spring 😀

As you may remember on my early February money post, I wrote i would do a monthly check on my debt snowball journey; and here I am… looking at my debt and making it public like I promised…

I’m not going to lie you guys; I had a few slips here and there, especially when it came to food decisions after a long day at work and with the kids… but overall, I’m pretty proud of myself! I am taking a look at my debt right now, and seeing it shrink, little by little, is the reward after all the sacrifices you make in the name of financial freedom!

So… here it goes!

As of the beginning of February, 2018 I owed exactly $9,807.44, including credit card debt, a bank loan, and one of my mom’s medical bills which I am paying for… Now, since the begining, most of the credit card debt, had been careless, impulse buys, fast food, or things that I thought I needed, and now are just sitting collecting dust… SMH… I should have known better.

But now, I am not using my credit cards, I make a budget and try my hardest to stick to it, and I am keeping a log of everything I spend a cent on…

The results? As of today, March 6th, 2018, I owe exactly $8,922.95! That’s almost a grant closer to financial freedom! Woo- frigging-hoo!!!

One thing I have found very important though, little rewards are a must for me… Getting out of debt can be very, VERY stressing and a lot of times frustrating. So, a LITTLE reward for all of your effort keeps the stress a little lower and the motivation a lot higher 🙂 I try to reward myself with things that won’t cost too much, and that I will enjoy, or use often enough to make it worth the price.

Reality check- Where’s your money going?

Well… If there’s something I really need to say for my first post  this year is… I’M SORRY! I’m sorry for neglecting this blog for a whole 7 months… But I promise, I’m back to doing what I love and I’m staying! 😀

My life has gone through a lot of changes in the last 6 months. I got a full time job outside of home, went through a separation and reconciliation, got 2 more pets, and decided to go back to school and continue pursuing my dreams… So, as of right now, I work full time at a medical office, go to school part time, take care of my three kids, my husband, my cat and her 2 kittens, blog, and try to keep my sanity all at the same time 🙂 Although people think I’m crazy for trying to find time to blog in my already packed schedule, for me, it honestly is a way of taking care of myself… like talking to a friend, or having a glass of wine… it relaxes me to have a “safe zone” for all my ideas, feelings, and thoughts…

OK, enough of me and my life… This year, we all are thinking of how to accomplish our new year resolutions, how to eat healthier, how to take better care of ourselves and our loved ones, how to improve our life quality, or how to get closer to the much desired financial freedom…  Wait… what???? Is there such thing as financial freedom???

The answer is YES! It is hard, and it takes lots of discipline and effort, but financial freedom is very much possible. There are, in fact, thousands of American families accomplishing this dream in the last couple of years.


To make the financial freedom dream possible, the very first step is to do an honest review of our spending… Where are we putting all of our hard earned money?

I did this review during the month of January. I did not change anything on how I spent my money, but I kept all of my receipts, and I wrote a journal about every other day on how I was feeling and how I was spending my money. Then, I did take a closer look at the end of the month, to see where I was spending the most and where I could make some adjustments. Here’s what I found out:

Most of my money is being “wisely spent”. Rent, bills, food, kids, fuel… But, I did notice one big thing. Whenever I felt down, or stressed, I tend to do some impulsive shopping. Generally on items that I’ve been wanting for s while, as I feel that helps ease the pain, but it isn’t always something I really need.

I also realized how much I’m paying on interest for my credit cards, and just keeping up with the payments isn’t shrinking the debt. That interest really sucks more blood than mosquitoes during a hot summer night!

Food budget is right on point, I’m raising 3 kids, 3 cats and a husband … We do not buy soda, bottled water, almost never get pre-processed or packaged food, I buy in bulk… I mean, you get it… Not much I can change there.

I am starting to unplug everything when we’re not using it, to see how much my electricity bill goes down! It’ll also help me move one more muscle everytime I have to plug it back in 😉

One big change that I did not necessarily made, but worked on, was how much we were paying for insurance for our vehicles. I spent a whole 2 hours on the phone, calling different companies and see what they offered and how much their plans were. Then I called my current insurance provider and told them what I had found out. Guess what??? I did not even have to change my insurance, because they matched the best price I found!

We also made a big decision, for next fall and until we’re financially free, we’re switching our kids to a public school. Currently they go to a private school, but it does not make much sense to keep doing so if we are not saving a cent for their future. Just on that alone, we’ll be saving over $450 a month!

So, I’m going to start my debt snowball, and I’ll take you with me on this adventure! I’ll do monthly updates on how things are going, and what’s working and what’s not!

Homemade bomb eczema cream.

Remember on my last post I said I would be sharing my recipes? Well, my first one is what has been the biggest life saver for my family!

I you or one of your family members have eczema, you know well the struggle: the itchiness, the red patches and break outs… But more than anything, you know the not so pocket friendly creams and balms we have to use.

Let me just tell you… Besides it not being cheap, this stuff is loaded with chemicals that end up hurting you more than it helps at the end.

I spent lots of time searching for the perfect recipe that would help my eczema heal, and that wouldn’t be so full of chemicals.  I found only a thousand different ones, and yes… I tried them all 😩 some better than others, but none of them really hit the spot.

I decided then to go to my lab (AKA my Kitchen) and start playing with ingredients I already had, and come up with my own eczema cream. Fast forward, lots of wasted product and tears of frustration later, I finally got it! A recipe that works for all my 3 kids and myself! 😍 I could not believe I had finally found a recipe that helped us all, and the bonus part: it ends up being cheaper than the chemical loaded stuff I used to buy. Win win!


Homemade bomb eczema cream



2 oz.                 coconut oil

2 oz.                 cocoa butter

2 oz.                 Shea butter

10 drops.        Chamomile essential oil

10 drops         tea tree essential oil


10 drops.        lavender essential oil



Using a double boiler, or the homemade version of it, put your butters and coconut oil to melt on low heat, do not let them boil or microwave them, as boiling or putting it in the microwave will kill most of the amazing skin nourishing properties. Once melted, remove from heat. Then, add your essential oils and use a wooden utensil to mix them well. Pour in your lidded container and let cool. If you have a chance, mix it again as soon as it starts to solidify, before it gets too solid. That is it!!! Once cooled down, you can use it instead of your regular eczema cream and watch your skin heal and feel better than ever!

I tried both versions, with and without the lavender oil, and my kids preffer the one without, as they are not big fans is lavender scent (but whyyyyy?!! 😣) and the effect on our skins was the same, so I left it out, but you can try it and see how you like it ☺

Why switch to homemade?

So, I must confess… Until a few years ago, I used to not care about what I, or my family ate, or used. I was trapped in the “normal lifestyle” of buying prepackaged foods, using store-bought personal care items, and lots and lots of cleaners, the stronger the chemical smell, the better, or so I thought… I would have never even thought I would be planting a garden and cooking from scratch, leave alone making homemade cleaners and lotions!

My kids and I all have eczema, and we must use a special type of cream and soap. I sweat like a construction man, so I always needed the clinical strength deodorant, and we all like to smell good and feel clean, so, as you can imagine, our personal care products were not very economical. With that being said, I always had to find a way to get some overtime, to be able to pay for the very few (and very expensive) things that worked for us… You know, I had no other option, and I was doing what was best to take care of my family and myself, right??? WRONG!

The moment came when, due to health issues with my second pregnancy, I was put on medical rest for a long time. No more income on my side for that time, and no more overtime money for our expensive products… I sat down and made my math, to see where we could reduce costs to “fit in” these things, but once I realized how much we were spending in every single category, I was shocked! We were throwing money away like crazy, buying expesive food that half of the time we did not even need, and lots of those times ended up throwing away because it had gone bad. We were spending more than we were making, and did not have one cent saved for the months I would not work.

I started doing lots of research, looking for ways to reduce costs and save money. Everywhere I went, I read the same thing: “Homemade is better. Homemade is cheaper.” I started educating myself about natural products, and how every single chemical that we ingest, or simply come in contact with, affects our body, our health, and our POCKET… Wait, Whaaaat?

Yes, as embarrasing as it is to say this, the idea of saving money was at first more attractive to me than the whole idea of living better and healthier. It wasn’t until I started trying some of the simplest recipes for real foods cooked from scratch, and natural, homemade personal care and cleaning products, that I started seeing for myself all of the benefits that they bring. But now, even when my main motivation is my family’s health, I am still very excited to say, that this lifestyle is helping us save A TON OF MONEY! Not millions, but we do save a lot, and with all of the amazing benefits that it brings, I know I can’t go wrong.

Making different stuff in my kitchen reminded me so much of my grandmother, who always had a recipe, or remedy for everything. She did her magic in the kitchen, and we had our problem solved, always. That inspired me to keep learning and trying, until I found a recipe that worked for what I needed.

I tried a lot of different recipes for every single item that I wanted to replace, and I ended up mixing different ones and changing some ingredients on most of them. That’s one of my favorite things about homemade products; you get to choose and twist recipes until it works perfect for you.

I will be sharing my recipes for all my homemade products in following articles, but I have included the link for the recipes that I was based of in the beginning.

I still have quite a ways to go, as I’m learning every year more about gardening, still trying to find a recipe that could replace some store bought items i would like to kiss good-bye, and, trying to learn more and more about real food, from different places and cultures, so that it doesn’t get boring 😉
